Yesterday, Twitter users celebrated five years since the first ever tweet. Users took to the site to wish it happy birthday by posting tweets.
The anniversary marked five years since the co-founder of Twitter; Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet which said: "inviting co-workers".
Twitter users have being using a special hashtag: #happybirthdaytwitter. One user, @FaktanyaAdalah wrote: "Thanks for being there when we need u. Indonesia love you! ."
The company’s fifth anniversary was announced last week and the site released a series of statistics to reflect the popularity of the site since it was established and its global usage.
The statistics showed that on average 140 million tweets are sent a day which shows an increase of nearly 100 million on the amount of posts a year ago.
The stats also show that more than 460,000 new accounts have been added every day over the last month. There has been a change in the way that users are accessing their Twitter accounts as the number of mobile Twitter users has increased by 182 per cent over the last year. As of yet, the company has not revealed how many people actually use the service via their phones.
Twitter has over 200 million registered accounts but it is unclear how many of these are active.
